Andrew Gould – Andrew says “I prefer to let the music do the talking”!
1. O Magnum Mysterium – Morten Lauridsen
I’ve been singing in church choirs since I was nine but I do not recall ever having sung any composition by Morten Lauridsen. I came across this a while ago. How anyone can listen and not be deeply moved I do not know. Apparently it is simple musically, but its effect is not. Click here.
2. God Is With Us: Christmas Proclamation – John Tavener
We’re familiar with John Tavener at St Barnabas. Song for Athene and The Lamb are regular features in our musical calendar. A superb composer, but you will probably think at first that it all sounds very…well…Tavener. Be patient. Click here. [King’s – 2007, № 15]
3. Nunc Dimittis in G – GV Stanford
CV Stanford is the bread and butter of Anglican music. I am biased as a bass, but judging by the comments on this YouTube performance by St John’s Cambridge, I am not alone in considering this one of the outstanding settings of the Nunc Dimittis. Click here.
4. Pretty Amazing Grace – Neil Diamond
I was given “Home Before Dark” a while ago and this track stood out. I’d never really taken much notice of Neil Diamond before. Whoops! Click here.
5. Did Trouble Me (Praise and Blame) – Tom Jones
This was not what I expected to hear. As one reviewer on Amazon remarked “If you’re a Tom Jones fan, this album is a must. If you are not a Tom Jones fan, this album will make you one.” Susan Werner is the lyricist. Have a listen to this interview on BBC sounds about the album: Click here.

6. The Trumpet shall Sound – GF Handel
Back to the sacred for the last banger. Baroque trumpet, baritone, Handel and hope. This performance is sublime. What’s not to love? Click here.
